How to Care for Locs

Caring for locs is all about patience, moisturization, and how well you keep the locs.

Locs are a beautiful and versatile hairstyle, achieved through various methods. While some start with natural hair and allow it to loc over time, others opt for loc extensions for instant length and volume. Whether you're starting your loc journey naturally or considering extensions, proper care is essential

Those with tighter curl patterns (4A to 4C) tend to experience more dryness and will benefit from richer moisturizing practices. Those with looser curls (3A to 3C) still need hydration but should choose lighter products to avoid weighing down their locs.

Keep the following tips in mind.

1. Use oil on your scalp

Applying oil to your scalp is crucial for hydration and sealing in essential nutrients. Choose a lightweight, natural oil like Africanlocs oil . Gently massage the oil into your scalp to stimulate blood flow and promote healthy hair growth. Remember, a little goes a long way; avoid over-application to prevent buildup.

2. Moisturize your locs the right way

Regardless of your hair texture, a sulfate-free shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner are essential for maintaining healthy locs. Sulfates can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. When conditioning, allow the product to penetrate your locs for several minutes (3-5 is a good starting point) before rinsing thoroughly.

There's often discussion within the loc community about using leave-in conditioners, especially for new locs. While some find them beneficial for added moisture, others worry they can loosen the locs or contribute to buildup.

The best approach depends on your hair's individual needs. If your locs feel particularly dry and brittle, a lightweight, water-based leave-in conditioner can be helpful, especially after the initial locking phase. If your hair retains moisture well with regular conditioning, consider an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse as a clarifying alternative.

3. Prioritize deep conditioning treatments

Note: Please do NOT do this with new locs. If your locs are in the starter phase, then deep conditioning risks detangling your starter locs and ruining them. Once your locs are mature (roughly 1 year after beginning your journey depending on the texture of your hair), deep conditioner your hair every 1-2 weeks to keep your locs healthy, strong, and moisturized. This deep conditioner is a great pick.

4. Avoid overwashing

While locs can be prone to buildup and odor, overwashing can lead to dryness, flaking, itchiness, breakage, and even thinning. Once your locs are mature, washing every 1-2 weeks is usually sufficient. Thoroughly drying your locs after washing is crucial to prevent mildew and that musty smell. Use a microfiber towel to absorb excess water and allow them to air dry completely or use a hooded dryer on a low setting.

5. Protect your locs at night

Even though locs are strong, they’re still vulnerable to friction, which can cause breakage and thinning, especially at the roots. Protect your locs at night by wrapping them in a silk or satin scarf, bonnet, or using a satin pillowcase. This will minimize friction and help retain moisture.

Taking care of your locs doesn't have to be complicated. With the right knowledge and a consistent routine, you can achieve healthy, stunning locs.
